Teslamuuntaja

Kuva

His patent says: “By suitably selecting the ratio between the number of turns in the primary and secondary windings, with regard to a correct application of the coefficients of resonance (capacitance, inductance and resistance) the high voltage of the primary circuit may be suitably converted into a low voltage high current output”.

It should be remembered that a spark produces a very sharply rising voltage pulse and that unbalances the local quantum energy field, as described earlier, producing very large energy flows as the local environment returns to its balanced steady-state. The spark, which is produced by relatively low power, is used as a trigger for vastly larger energy flows, which feed the step-down transformer, producing serious current at reasonable voltage, capable of doing useful work, without the requirement for any input power from the user.

You will notice how simple this circuit is. Three capacitors “a1”, “b1” and “c1” in a chain, form a single high-voltage capacitor. The blobs shown connected across these capacitors are emergency discharge spark gaps put there to deal with unusual events like the aerial being hit by a lightning strike. This circuit is very much like the Wimshurst machine circuit which Hermann uses as an illustration of the principle of operation of these kinds of circuits. In this circuit, he shows a special motor marked “M” which is driven by the circuit and he also shows output terminals which can have other equipment connected across them. When the oscillatory discharges in the primary circuit become weaker or cease entirely, the capacitors are charged again by the static electricity until the accumulated charge again breaks down across the spark gap. All this is repeated as long as electricity is produced by the static machine through the application of mechanical energy to it.

Herman states that without the spark gap arrangement across the three capacitors connected between the aerial and the earth, “it is impossible to collect and render available large quantities of electrical energy.”

LC circuit, also called a resonant circuit, tank circuit, or tuned circuit
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LC_circuit

One of the first demonstrations of resonance between tuned circuits was Lodge's "syntonic jars" experiment around 1889. He placed two resonant circuits next to each other, each consisting of a Leyden jar connected to an adjustable one-turn coil with a spark gap. When a high voltage from an induction coil was applied to one tuned circuit, creating sparks and thus oscillating currents, sparks were excited in the other tuned circuit only when the circuits were adjusted to resonance. Lodge and some English scientists preferred the term "syntony" for this effect, but the term "resonance" eventually stuck.

Spark-gap transmitter
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spark-gap_transmitter

The effects of sparks causing unexplained "action at a distance", such as inducing sparks in nearby devices, had been noticed by scientists and experimenters well before the invention of radio. Extensive experiments were conducted by Joseph Henry (1842), Thomas Edison (1875) and David Edward Hughes (1878). With no other theory to explain the phenomenon, it was usually written off as electromagnetic induction.

In 1886, after noticing unusual induced sparking in a Riess spiral, physicist Heinrich Hertz concluded this phenomenon could be used to scientifically verify James Clerk Maxwell's predictions on electromagnetism. Hertz used a tuned spark gap transmitter and a tuned spark gap detector (consisting of a loop of wire connected to a small spark gap) located a few meters from the source. In a series of experiments, Hertz verified that electromagnetic waves were being produced by the transmitter: when the transmitter sparked, small sparks also appeared across the receiver's spark gap, which could be seen under a microscope.

Many experimenters used the spark gap setup to further investigate the new "Hertzian wave" (radio) phenomenon, including Oliver Lodge and other "Maxwellian" investigators. The Serbian American engineer Nikola Tesla proposed methods to synchronise sparks with the peak output of an alternator, which he patented in 1896, while pursuing a wireless lighting and power distribution system based on his own conduction/ether theories.

The Tesla coil, D'Arsonval coil, and Oudin coil, three similar circuits widely used to produce high voltage, high frequency electricity that were applied to patients bodies in the obsolete medical field of Electrotherapy around the turn of the 20th century. In 1889, French physician and pioneering biophysicist Jacques Arsene D'Arsonval first experimented with applying high frequency alternating current to the body and documenting its effects, using circuit 2 above. He discovered that frequencies above 10 kHz did not cause the sensation of electric shock, and seemed to have beneficial effects. In 1891 Serbian-American inventor Nikola Tesla invented the Tesla coil, circuit 1, and experimented with passing hundreds of thousands of volts from it through his body. In 1893, French physician Paul Marie Oudin modified the D'Arsonval coil to produce higher voltage by adding a large series-driven "resonator" coil to it inventing the Oudin coil, circuit 3 above.

By 1900 the three circuits, which produced radio frequency current at frequency of 100 kHz to 2 MHz, were widely used by doctors to treat a huge variety of medical conditions, and separate bodies of clinical practice grew up around "Tesla currents", "D'Arsonval currents", and "Oudin currents". The D'Arsonval coil, s simple spark-excited tuned circuit, produced relatively low voltage and high currents, around 20,000-30,000 volts and 100-500 mA, and was used for diathermy, deep heating of body tissues. The Tesla and Oudin coils produced extremely high voltages, 50,000 volts up to one million volts at low currents. The Tesla circuit used a resonant transformer, while the Oudin coil produced high voltage with a series-fed resonator coil which was not magnetically coupled to the other coil. In use, a pointed electrode was connected to the high voltage terminal of the Tesla or Oudin coil which produced luminous brush discharges (called "effluves"), and the doctor held the electrode (by an insulated handle) near the patient's body and played the sparks over the ailing body part. This treatment was not painful for the patient because the high frequency currents did not cause electric shock. Alternately, a "vacuum electrode" consisting of a metal electrode sealed inside a partially evacuated glass bulb was stroked over the ailing body part. This produced a dramatic violet glow while operating. Tesla apparatus was mostly used in the United States, while D'Arsonval and Oudin coils were used in Europe, although electrotherapy units manufactured for physicians often could generate all three types of current. Electrotherapy had its heyday around 1919 after World War 1 , but in the 1920s and 30s authorities began to crack down on fraudulent medical treatments and electrotherapy became obsolete by 1945.

Alterations to image: Erased unnecessary excessive length of D'Arsonval coil so Oudin coil circuit diagram could be moved closer to the others to make the image more compact. Also erased a confusing dotted line from the D'Arsonval coil indicating a second electrode that was sometimes used in this circuit.

Oudin and Tesla coils are spark-excited air-core double-tuned transformer circuits that use resonance to generate very high voltages at low currents. They produce alternating current in the radio frequency (RF) range. The medical coils of the early 20th century produced potentials of 50,000 to nearly a million volts, at frequencies in the range 200 kHz to 5 MHz. The primary circuit of the coil has Leyden jar capacitors (C) which in combination with the primary winding of the coil (L1) make a resonant circuit (tuned circuit). In medical coils usually two capacitors were used for safety, one in each side of the primary circuit, to isolate the patient completely from the potentially lethal low frequency primary current. The primary circuit also has a spark gap (SG) that acts as a switch to excite oscillations in the primary. The primary circuit is powered by a high voltage transformer or induction coil (T) at a potential of 2 - 15 kV. The transformer repeatedly charges the capacitors, which then discharge through the spark gap and the primary winding. This cycle is repeated many times per second. During each spark, the charge moves rapidly back and forth between the capacitor plates through the primary coil, creating a damped RF oscillating current in the primary tuned circuit which induced the high voltage in the secondary.

The secondary winding (L2) is open-circuited, and connected to the output electrode of the device. In the Oudin coil, one side of the primary winding (L1) is grounded and the other side is connected to the secondary, so the primary and secondary are in series. There were two versions of the Oudin coil:

In earlier Oudin circuits the two coils were separate, not magnetically coupled, with a small horizontal primary "D'Arsonval" coil (L1) of 20-40 turns with a tap connected to a large vertical secondary "Oudin resonator" (L2) with many turns of fine wire (400 - 600 in large coils, 100 - 300 in small ones), connected to the high voltage terminal on top. In this circuit the high voltage was generated entirely by resonance in the high Q secondary coil. The addition of the "resonator" coil to the "D'Arsonval" coil was Oudin's contribution; the rest of the circuit was invented by Jacques D'Arsonval.

In later Oudin circuits the coils were magnetically coupled, forming an autotransformer, so the primary induces an EMF in the secondary by electromagnetic induction. Both coils were usually wound on the same coil form, the primary consisting of relatively few turns of heavy wire at the bottom with an adjustable tap, connected to the secondary winding, made of many turns of fine wire. Oudin found this circuit produced higher voltages due to the large turns ratio of the transformer.

Although it doesn't include a capacitor, the secondary winding is also a resonant circuit (electrical resonator); the parasitic capacitance between the ends of the secondary coil resonates with the large inductance of the secondary at a particular resonant frequency. When it is excited at this frequency by the primary, large oscillating voltages are induced in the secondary. The number of turns in the primary winding, and thus the resonant frequency of the primary, could be adjusted with a tap on the coil. When the two tuned circuits are adjusted to resonate at the same frequency, the large turns ratio of the coil, aided by the high Q of the tuned circuits, steps up the primary voltage to hundreds of thousands to millions of volts at the secondary.

The secondary is directly connected to the primary circuit, which carries lethal low frequency 50/60 Hz currents at thousands of volts from the power transformer. Since the Oudin coil was a medical device, with the secondary current applied directly to a person's body, for safety the Oudin circuit has two capacitors (C), one in each leg of the primary, to completely isolate the coil and output electrode from the supply transformer at the mains frequency.
...

D'Arsonval apparatus - D'Arsonval first used a high frequency alternator, but this device could not produce frequencies over 10 kHz. To reach higher frequencies he developed a circuit consisting of a single tuned circuit, made of two Leyden jar capacitors and a small coil of relatively few, 10 to 30 turns of heavy wire, with an induction coil and spark gap to excite oscillations. It resembled a Tesla circuit without the secondary winding. The circuit produced relatively low voltage (perhaps 30 kV), high current electricity, called "D'Arsonval currents". The circuit was "bipolar" with two wires from opposite ends of the coil connected to electrodes at different places on the patient's body. The high frequency currents could produce heat in the patient's body, similar to the operation of a microwave oven; this was called Diathermy (Behary). Other names were also used such as Thermo-Faradism and Thermo-Penetration depending on whether it was used for therapy or for destructive effects in surgery (Behary).

Oudin resonator - French physician Paul Marie Oudin in 1893 modified the D'Arsonval circuit by adding a second large "resonator" coil made of many turns of fine wire to a tap on the small D'Arsonval coil. By adjusting the tap point he could bring the second coil to resonance with the tuned circuit, generating higher voltages at lower currents, similar to the Tesla circuit. In early "Oudin resonator" apparatus the two coils are separate and not magnetically coupled. Later Oudin found that the efficiency could be increased by magnetically coupling the coils, making the small coil the primary winding for the big coil. The Oudin resonator generated very high voltage, low current electricity. It was a "unipolar" circuit, with one end grounded and a single output terminal.

Tesla-Thomson apparatus - Serbian-American engineer Nikola Tesla pioneered the field of high-voltage RF resonant transformers. He and Elihu Thomson experimented with applying high voltage to their bodies. Although Tesla invented many different resonant transformer circuits, the electrotherapy circuit that bears his name was a "bipolar" circuit consisting of a spark-excited tuned primary coil of few turns encircling the center of a symmetrical bipolar secondary coil of many turns of fine wire, with output terminals on each end.

The D'Arsonval and Oudin apparatus became popular in Europe, while the Tesla-Thompson apparatus was mostly used in America. During the first decades of the 20th century there was a rivalry between these camps, and debate in the medical literature as to whether "Tesla currents" or "Oudin currents" were better for various conditions. By 1920 it was realized that the currents were very similar. Since the circuits were so similar, medical suppliers sold combination "high frequency" units that could be set up for Tesla, D'Arsonval, or Oudin therapy, often also combined with Rontgen ray (x-ray).

After Oudin combined the primary and "resonator" coil together on the same form, making them an air-core autotransformer, the only significant difference between the Tesla and Oudin apparatus was that the medical Tesla coil was "bipolar" while the Oudin coil was "unipolar", with one end grounded. As time went on the meaning of the terms changed, until (by perhaps 1920) the term Tesla coil meant a "bipolar" coil; any high voltage coil with an ungrounded balanced secondary with two output terminals, while the term Oudin coil meant a "unipolar" coil; any coil with a grounded secondary and a single output terminal.

“The advancement of science,” d’Arsonval said, “has always been consequence of the intuitive and the imaginative. To be a great scientist, one must, first, be a very sensitive man and, at bottom, an artist, if not a poet.” Regarding the role of the physical sciences in biology, and specifically electricity, he stated in the first years of his career: “Electricity must become, in my opinion, one of our most powerful means of action to change the living beings. I am convinced that the therapy of the future will employ such means as physical healing modifiers (heat, light, electricity, cold, hot, etc.) ...

Värähtelypiirin perusteita

Värähtelypiirillä on taipumus värähdellä sille ominaisella resonanssitaajuudella.

Mikä mielenkiintoista, Vasiliev OV (2015) käsittelee sarjaan ja rinnan kytkettyjä värähtelypiirejä teoksen Electricity and Unusual Features sivuilla 33-38.

Sarjaan kytketyn resonanssipiirin mekaaninen vastine on keinu, jonka kineettinen energia on puhtaasti mekaanista.

Rinnan kytketyn värähtelypiirin resonanssitaajuudella virran kulutus on pieni.
