9 August 1947
My Geiger-Muller counter has been running amok since yesterday: At the beginning, in early June 1947, when it arrived, it clicked two to five times on the first day in the room and in the orgone accumulator. The the Geiger-Muller apparatus was silent for many weeks and did not show the slightest reaction. Therefore, I was already starting to think it was worthless for my orgone research. Yesterday, by chance, out of curiosity, I picked it up again, to see whether it was still dead. When I switched on the power, apparatus suddenly burst into life. The pulse counter spun in circles, about one complete revolution = 100 pulses per second. Today the spectacle repeated itself and I have no idea what is happening.
Why does it operate only for one day?
Why was it dead for weeks?
Why does it now race like it has gone mad?
It does not indicate cosmic rays. Is it totally drunk on orgone?
Continuation of Geiger-Muller tests:
1. Switching off tube: No humming, but one click each time the high voltage is applied.
2. Questions to Washington on the phone, 2 p.m.
a. Have you ever worked with such a device?
b. What is most speedy reaction of Geiger-Muller to radiation?
c. What is “normal” reaction to cosmic rays?
d. Ever seen 100 per second?
3. Measurement with seconds meter + recorder.
In 25 seconds 1,500 pulses!
60 per second!
Incredible!
Consequences:
1. Wheels are rotated by pulses of orgone energy.
2. It will be possible to power motors with orgone.
3. This use will be risk-free; it will be cheap.
14 August 1947
5-6 a.m. It is beginning to become clear to me that the reaction in the impulse counter has nothing to do with the mechanics of cosmic rays. It is new: Orgone is capable of turning a wheel if a counter tube or similar instrument is so excited that an electromagnetic wheel rotates. It seems important that the electrons “excite” the orgone in the tube. It remains to be discovered whether the electrons or the orgone itself is the motor force. I Have simply transformed orgone into electrical energy. The impulse is a simple electromagnetic system.
9 a.m. Proof for orgone = motor force. I killed the reaction by completely uncovering the counter tube. Reaction 0. As soon as the counter tube is placed in the accumulator or metal housing, the motor on the counter starts to run.
Tasks for orgone motor.
1. Does the orgone motor also work outside the metal-lined room,* with accumulator in the open air or in an orgone-free room?
2. What types of electromagnetic apparatus are caused to move?
3. How much can be eliminated from the structure of Geiger-Muller without destroying the principle?
4. What are the conditions for obtaining a patent if a Geiger-Muller counter tube is used?
5. Can the motor force be increased, and how?
*Reich refers to a room in the laboratory at Orgonon which was lined with metal as an accumulator.
To Arthur Garfield Hays
1 September 1947
Dear Mr. Hays:
Your office is handling some of the legal affairs of the Orgone Institute, and especially the application for tax exemption of the Orgone Institute Research Laboratories, Inc.
I am writing you this letter on a special matter. The enclosed document gives you some orientation on the following:
The orgone energy has been used up to now only in medical curative experiments with much satisfactory success. On August 8 1947, I discovered a motor force in this same energy. This important discovery has not only brought joy and satisfaction but also some tremendous worries to this laboratory. The reaction of the specific device called Geiger-Muller counter to a most simple and cheap orgone accumulator is twice and three times as fast as it is (according to publications and communication from the manufacturer of the instrument) to an atomic energy pile. The implications of this fact are tremendous practically. The simplicity and low cost of the basic principle of obtaining a motor force constitutes a danger.
I don’t know whether any private economic interests are involved in the utilization of atomic energy. Officially, only the state has the monopoly on atomic energy. Should the latter be the case, then there would be no danger in my discovery, since the State Department should be most interested in saving money. But, on the other hand, should any private capital have been invested in the exploitation of atomic energy, then I am sure every attempt would be made to kill my discovery, since it means loss of much money to the investors.
I would appreciate it highly if you would be kind enough to function as the adviser in this manner, with the goal to make any move impossible which would tend (as it is so often done) to keep the discovery of the motor force in the orgone energy from becoming effective socially and economically.
I would also be most grateful if you were willing to help me to contact some person in the government who would be best suited to bring this discovery to the attention of the State Department.
I have forwarded the same legalized statement to my coworkers in various countries, and I intend to publish my discovery as soon the basic controls have been carried through. I shall also apply for a patent as soon as these basic controls will be finished.
To L. B. Szekely
6 September 1947
Dear Mr. Szekely,
Your letter of 24 August again contained some interesting news. There is only one point on which I disagree with you. A purely formal language, such as mathematics, seems to me fulfill its function in natural science only if it
1. can also base itself on empirical observations and experiments, and if it
2. does not lose contact with the subjects of everyday speech.
I believe that only when these two conditions are met can formal logic or mathematics be used as a natural scientific tool. If these two conditions are not met, the path will inevitably lead into a “shadow world” which one can easily mistake for the real world. In the last few decades we have seen the terrible example of the effects that can be achieved by higher mathematics pursued without a vision. But I do agree with you that, while clinging to what is visible and tangible, we should strive toward more general and abstract symbolic formulations of our sensations. For example, it would have been an enormous risk to the development of orgonomy if we have tried to gasp functionalism in nature before direct observation had given us the rotating orgone envelope, the light phenomena in the dark, the loss of orgone in shrinking tissues, etc.
As I have written to you, theoretical orgonomy has already achieved fundamental formulations of “functional equations,” and it will probably be interesting to follow closely to that extent these equations are compatible with the logistic attempts to define functionalism in nature. But, there is no question, and it must be clear to all of us working with functionalism, that we are in the process of making the breakthrough to the functional law of nature. That is certainly not just a major but also a highly responsible task.
Since I started my research in 1920, it has always been entirely clear to me that my work was dominated by an objective logic which at first could not be understood, and I felt I was its executive organ. Understanding this logic and rationality in the development of observations, working hypotheses, theories, and new findings itself forms a major part of my research work. A harmony of subject and object, of observer and observed, that was based on some kind of law, seemed to consistently permeate this logic.
Dr. Hoppe will in the meantime have informed you that in August I succeeded in discovering a motor force in atmospheric orgone; on the Geiger-Muller counter, this force already produces twice the reaction of an atomic energy pile. So my research is slowly working its way through to the quantitative determination of orgone energy.
It has already been established beyond any doubt that fundamental errors of thought have occurred in classical physics when determining the natural constants. For example, many of the natural constants discovered by me reveal not only a statistically constant number that is related to Planck’s constant, but also a variable number, the variation which seems to follow some law. In other words, I am coming across natural events in which constancy and law-based variability, strict, almost mechanical regularity, and seemingly complete freedom are all blended into one.

New facts and ideas concerning GM reaction:
1. The “clicks” are noises similar to the crackle in radio sets before thunderstorms.
2. The whitish orgone rays are miniature lightnings, discharges of the nebulous form of orgone.
3. There are not three types of orgone rays but only three different states of one type of orgone energy. “Fog” concentrates into bluish dots to yellow rays. Fog is the “matrix” of energy, which discharges in whitish rays, audible as cracks.
4. Orgone and electrical tension avoid each other or hunt each other away, depending on which is stronger.
5. The 750 threshold tension is hunting the orgone rays through the system; discharges them into electromagnetic system.
6. A lightning is concentrated orgone discharge.
7. A battery electrical current is again orgonotic charge in tight space.
To A. E. Hamilton
15 September 1947
Dear Mr. Hamilton:
I regret that you are hesitating to write up Neill’s lecture. Your critical comments on Neill’s work will be most welcome. I Believe in sharp differences of opinion in important matters.
I have not only nothing against your telling about the motor force in orgone energy, to whomever you wish, but, rather it is the interest of the work that this major event in the fight against atomic energy should be brought home to as many people as possible.
It will interest you to know that a new counter tube gives reaction at the pointer after only about five days’ soaking of orgone energy. At present, there is no doubt anymore that the orgonotic motor force exists. It is “merely” a problem of developing it.
16 October 1947
The transition from the functional realm to the mechanical realm is probably caused by the condition of orgone. Primordial orgone is nebulous. Flashing rays are concentrated orgone.
